The Fake "Kuching" Postmark?

|

I recently came across to this nice stamp in ebay, bearing a supposedly rare postmark. The first thing that you'll notice is the oval of bars postmark at the top right corner, which means that the stamp is originally cancelled-to-ordered.

I don't know the exact date but it is likely to be Oct 192_. This date is problematic because the stamp is released on the 1st of July 1909 and overprinted with "20 cents" on the 7th of September 1909 (only after 2 months of its release). The town is probably Kuching because the third letter resembles C more than D. However, because Kuching is a 7 letter word, while Kudat is a 5 letter word, the K would be much lower in the circle if it was Kuching.

There is a similar stamp here (Silamstar's). Compare the postmark, particularly the town and date.

Labuk & Sugut postmark

|

This week has been a great week where one of the rarest North Borneo postmarks of Labuk & Sugut apperead in ebay. It's nice to know that the final price of the stamps reached $316.00, making it the single most expensive cds of North Borneo in ebay so far this year.

Labuk and Sugut district, which forms part of the Sandakan Residency, is of vast extent and embraces the country drained by the Labuk, Sugut and Paitan Rivers. It joins the district of Marudu in the north and the Interior Residency in the west. The head-quarters of the district were at Klagan (on the Labuk River), seven hours from Sandakan by launch, but owing to the difficulties of the bar and the fact that the station was continually being flooded, it was moved to Beluran in Labuk Bay. With some exception, almost all of the travelling to Klagan HQ has to be done by native boat. The country, a region of vast, gloomy forests, is sparsely inhabited save in the river area, where Orang Sungei (River Folk) are found.

The date of the cds is probably 23 FEB 1907. Proud recorded the dates to be from 6 MAY 1903 to 2 NOV 1907. Examples of cds dated 30 OCT 1912 on 20c and and 25c stamps and 30 OCT 1916, are all possibly CTOs. The picture above shows the Labuk & Sugut postmarks, taken from Sarawak Specialist Society site (ref. Robert S. Cragg). The cds are more obvious and clear, showing similar dates of 30 OCT 1912.

From the same seller, there's also a Brooketon cds on North Borneo and Sarawak stamps, which sells for $162.49.

Most Expensive North Borneo Stamps in Ebay May 2010

|

"Most Interesting, Most Expensive May 2010"

For the month of May, I haven't been able to religiously follow the ebay. Nevertheless, I think some of the most expensive stuffs of the months have been well noted.   The cumulative value of the top 5 items this month is $ 1602.40. I personally think that the one on rank 3 deserves special mention although, unfortunately, the picture has been deleted quite early. I have been eyeing on the cover but without no luck :(

The famous Parker cover of North Borneo. The cover is philatelic in nature, but I think would make an excellent piece for exhibition.

The Misery of Euro

|

GBP against Euro

US Dollar Against Euro

The Weakening of Euro

Bidding in ebay is no longer fun especially when the currency you use is weaker against the other major currencies (especially US dollar and GBP). I use EURO, so its weakening means that I am slightly more disadvantaged compared to other bidders from outside Europe, especially so in ebay where even 1 cent can determine the difference between winning and losing. According to Reuters, the Euro sinks to its 18-months lowest levels against US dollar, all thanks to the growing fear of the fiscal tightening in Greece, Spain and Portugal. Even Malaysian Ringgit is stronger against Euro. I remember changing 1 Euro for RM 5 last year, but now my 1 Euro only gets me RM 3.90!

Ebay
Nevertheless, the hunt for North Borneo stamps continues. The signs of recession never seem to have a big impact on ebay. You still can't get your stamps cheaply enough and the growing interest in the stamps means you'll face an ever growing competition. The latest expensive stuff that appeared in ebay is a North Borneo stamps collection of Dr. Bob. This collection reached a final price of $ 515.52. I couldn't really believe that it would reach more than $300 because the stamps are mostly CTOs although there are several rare stamps among them:

Censored Japanese Occupation Cover 1942

|

Description

This is a rare Japanese occupation cover of North Borneo that appeared in ebay and ended in 15 April 2010. It reached a final price of $717.77      (€ 558), one of the most expensive covers in ebay so far. It was listed by a fellow Malaysian seller, sarawakiana. He described it as " Imperial Japanese Government (Dai Nippon Teikoku Seifu) single line overprint on the 1c, 4c, and war tax 1 cent. Cancelled by Sandakan postmark of 20.4.18 (20.4.1942) and censored at Sandakan central post office. Addressed to Lahad Datu".

Note: I am supposed to list the top 5 items in ebay for April, however, I decided to combine it with next month's list. :)

The Hunt for Great Postmarks

|

Introduction

There seems to be a recent upsurge in interests in North Borneo postmarks, especially the rare, less commonly seen ones. The three pictures below are quite testimonial to this. All were listed in ebay from a Dutch seller, and actually ended today, 25 April 2010. Lot [1] reached a whooping winning bid of $765.51, while lot [2] and [3] managed to get more than $200 in hammer prices. All won by a single bidder, although with stiff competitions and attracted more than 10 enthusiastic bidders.

Lot 1

In lot [1], let's have a look at the most obvious postmarks i.e. the ones on the $5, $10 and $2 stamps. The purple $5 stamp is the 1889 version, tied with Kudat circular date stamp (cds) right at the centre, dated 29 MR 1892. This is the second earliest postmark from Kudat. From 1886 - 1894, it is usually strucked in black ink and later from 1894 - 1895 in blue, before black ink being used again from 1895 - 1900. The the green $2 stamps bear essentially the same postmark, dated 17 SP 1892. The postmark in $10 shows the year in 2 digits compared to the $5 and $2.

[1]

The first and second rows consist of semipostal stamps overprinted with the carmine Maltese cross and black inscription of "Red cross two cents", produced in 1916 and 1918 respectively. A proportion of these stamps was sold by the National Philatelic War Fund in aid of the Society of British Red Cross and the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. This was to fund the wounded or for the soldier's widow and orphans, following the World War I, where Great Britain declared war on Germany in August 4, 1914. The stamps sold by the National Philatelic War Fund are usually mint, whereas the ones retained by the North Borneo company are either in mint condition or used postally. The postally used stamps with this overprint are particularly rare especially from towns other than Sandakan (the capital city from 1883 - 1946). In the picture above, at least 2 stamps bear a clear Kudat postmark on the overprinted stamps, while the rest show vague cds from the same town.

Interestingly, the lot also includes some of the earliest North Borneo stamps, largely bearing the Kudat postmark as well. This is to be expected because Kudat was the capital city of North Borneo from 1881 - 1883, before being moved to Sandakan.

Lot 2

[2]

Stamps in this lot are largely tied with Sandakan postmark, the unique circular dated mark within a rectangular box as well as Tawao cds. The Tawao postmark is quite difficult to find but the Sandakan postmark is relatively common.  The green-black 18 cents stamp, as Silamstar pointed, was overprinted with the red "20 CENTS" inscription just after 2 months it was produced, therefore postmarks outside of Sandakan are considered very rare. Please look at his Kudat postmark on the 18 cents stamp here. The two 18 cents stamps in this lot bear the Sandakan postmarks. The other postmarks in this lot are unclear.

Lot 3

[3]

This lot consists of mostly Kudat cds and some Sandakan cds.
